It is nearing the end of autumn and that means that  it is already getting dark around 4:30 – 5:00 p.m. every evening. Some people are prone to SAD; Seasonal Affective Disorder. As I drive home from work every evening, and it grows dark, it is the lights of the city that cheer me up. Holiday lights also warm my heart and spark a spirit of joy. If it weren’t for the bright and colorful lights, I would probably feel down in the dumps. I am always happy to see daylight savings time return in the spring though.

Inhaling this floral aroma quickly soothes the edginess and anxiety of being trapped indoors, according to British researchers. This is because rose oil revs up the beta brain wave activity that makes you feel relaxed and calm. This positive effect gets stronger and stronger the more you use it since it becomes a conditioned response in the brain.

To use, just mix six drops of rose essential oil and two ounces of unscented lotion, then rub into your arms, shoulders and neck. Use a few times each day. You will feel the cabin fever lift and relaxation will be yours. A rose by any other name will smell as sweet.  I use rose oil directly on my face everyday and every night and, besides smelling so pleasant, it helps my skin stay youthful looking and soft. It makes my wrinkles less noticeable too.

Oregano essential oil helps nearly 100 % of people bounce back from colds, sore throats and sinus infections, often in just 48 hours, reports Fred Pescatore, M.D., medical director of Partners in Integrative Medicine in New York City. He goes on to explain that “oregano oil is rich in thymol and carvacrol, potent compounds which fight infections.”

To battle a cold or infection just add three drops of oregano oil to to water or juice and drink one time daily for five days.  It is better to drink this oil because oregano essential oil works best when it’s absorbed through the gastro intestinal tract.

Remember that oregano is one of the best healing agents on earth. It is better than prescription meds. Be careful not to overuse this herb. Always check with your doctor first before beginning any new herb for purposes of healing.

Yes, Lemon Balm Makes Us Calm!

It is true that if you are feeling down and tired, that herbs such as mint or citrus are energizing, but they are also invigorating as well as being energizing. However, if you want to feel more relaxed and positive, without being energized, try taking a bath infused with lemon balm.

Lemon balm and the essential oil of lemon balm relaxes and uplifts your body and mind without being invigorating. The following ingredients are the recipe you need to make your own bath soak. I have been using powdered milk alot because the price of milk is so high. Powdered milk is totally fat free, so I use it for cooking. I don’t use that much powdered milk because I try to drink almond milk or rice milk for health reasons. I try to stay away from cow’s milk as much as possible. The powdered milk contains lactic acid, which is a gentle exfoliant that leaves your skin glowing and smooth.

Whip some home made lemon balm bath salts with the following ingredients:

  • one cup Epsom salts
  • one-half cup powdered milk
  • one to two drops lemon balm essential oil

Combine these ingredients and place in a jar with a tight-fitting lid. Before bedtime, scoop up a handful of salts and sprinkle into a warm bath. Soak in the water for 10-15 minutes, or for as long as you like, pat dry and head for bed! You will feel happy and uplifted in no time and better able to to sleep immediately. This mixture keeps indefinitely if stored in a dry, cool storage place. You can also make a relaxing tea from the dry leaves of  the lemon balm plant.

Skin Glows with Rose

Yes, you can brighten your complexion with roses. Rose oil is a natural source of tissue-regenerating retinoic acid and it is rich in vitamin C (an anti oxidant which fades pigmentation). Rose oil is also full of  linolenic acid, which helps to halt blotchiness.  Rose is just an all around anti-aging oil, according to botanist Peter Gail, Ph.D. Rub a rose oil infused product into your skin everyday to get that glowing, attractive complexion.

To stop flaking and redness from appearing on your skin, try using primrose oil. This is great for people with eczema and/or psoriasis. Research studies confirm that primrose oil reduces itching, redness and swelling. Th is is due to the gamma linoleic acid found in primrose. Gamma linoleic acid is a polyunsaturated fat that boosts production of inflammation-regulating prostaglandins.

It comes in the form of a supplement. Always check with your doctor first before you take this oil. Evening primrose oil is not recommended for people who take blood-thinning medications or who have certain medical conditions.

Get Rid of Headaches Yet with Peppermint Scent

This is the time of year that I love; yet, I hate it too because my allergies really get triggered during the late summer and early autumn season. I am allergic to ragweed and as much as I love the colors of autumn, it gives me painful sinus headaches. Maybe you can relate to what I’m talking about. Anyway, I try not to take sinus decongestants because they dry me up and my heart starts racing faster, which is scary.

I use guided visualization. I envision my head pain and pressure vanishing and that seems to help somewhat. It doesn’t take all the pressure away. So, I have tried taking peppermint oil and saturating a cotton ball with it. Then, when I start to drive my 16-mile commute back and forth to work everyday, I stick the peppermint-soaked cotton ball in the heating vent so I sniff in the soothing oil, and, voila, it takes away the edge off the pressure and pain.

Be mindful that I combine this way of treating the headache with use of a netty pot and saline solution, along with inhaling of eucalyptus too.  I avoid taking pain killers and I use the alternate treatment of natural herbs and plant medicine whenever possible. Peppermint and lavender are very soothing in combination with each other too.

By the way,Dr. Fred Pescatore, M.D. and director of the Centers for Integrative and Complementary Medicine in  NYC and Dallas, reports that people who load up on pain killing meds when they are fighting viruses actually stay sick three days longer because those medications suppress the fever which actually kill the viruses. So, the next time you are sick with a virus, lay in bed and welcome the presence of a fever, since that is what will kill the virus that made you sick in the first place.

Cold weather is on its’ way. If you get a sore throat, you should try gargling with oregano oil. Just mix two drops of oregano oil oregano-compwc-loreswith 12 ounces of water and gargle with this mixture at least three times per day. This antiviral mix will reduce the inflammation within 48 hours. It will also help throat cells resist viral attacks by strengthening your immune system.

Zinc will also decrease the severity of a cold or a virus. It actually reduces the severity of a sore throat and the common cold by 48 per cent. That is because zinc destroys viruses at their point of entry; the tissues lining the throat and nose, so that they cannot infiltrate mucous membranes. This information is from the book entitled “Dr. Carolyn Dean’s Natural Prescriptions for the Common Cold” by Carolyn Dean, M.D., N.D.

Also, taking a cat nap for 20 minutes each day can cut your recovery time by three days, so says a Cornell University study. Your body amps up its production of virus-destroying immune cells when we sleep, reports Dr. James B. Mass, Ph.D., the lead researcher in the Cornell study.

Use Oregano Oil to Coat Your Sore Throat

A sore throat signals the presence of a virus or bacteria in mucus membranes. This usually leads to a cold, strep throat, or some other serious infection. New research has discovered that oregano oregano-compwc-loresoil can put the halt on a sore throat very effectively.

As a matter of fact, oregano oil can be as effective at killing germs within 24 hours as streptomycin and other forms of antibiotics! Yes, oregano is one of the best herbs on this earth and it can perform wondrous health cures. The essential oil extracted from this marvelous herb is much stronger and helps to rid soreness caused by germs much quicker than just eating the herb.

I don’t know about you but I love the flavor of dried herb on my pizza and in other foods. I grow it in my herb garden and it is just wonderful and easy to grow. I grow the Italian kind as well as the Greek variety.

I am thankful for prescription antibiotics as they have saved numerous lives. But using antibiotics over and over again can cause yeast infections, and, after a while, the antibiotics lose their effectiveness. That is why I try not to take antibiotics unless I am seriously ill with a bacterial infection. Using prescription antibiotics can disrupt the body’s delicate balance of “good” vs. “bad” bacteria. This is why I prefer to take safe and natural botanical microbe-zappers that get rid of the infection without the nasty side effects.

Just mix two drops of oregano oil with six ounces of water. Gargle three times per day and you will feel relief from your sore throat within 24 hours.

Quick! Nourish Your Hair with Oils to Make it Thick

If you take prescription meds, be aware that some of these medications can cause unusual shedding within three months and cause hair to become thinner. Antidepressants, blood pressure meds, oral contraceptives, hormone replacement therapy, blood thinners and retinoids (for acne and psoriasis) are some examples of  such hair thinning medications. Don’t despair; there are some natural cures out there!

Eat foods with B vitamins as B vitamins speed up hair regrowth by helping to stregthen hair follicles. Wahing your hair twice per week with a dandruff shampoo containing ketoconazole thickens hair strands by 8% and it reduces hair loss by as much as 16%.

Also, women who took a 5 milligram supplement of the trace mineral, silicon, reported that the thickness of their hair doubled. In another study, hair growth leaped 44% in patients who massaged their scalps daily for seven months with a blend of follicle-stimulating essential oils. Here is a recipe for success:

  1. Take 3 drops of rosemary and lavender essential oils and 2 drops of thyme and cedarwood oils and mix together.
  2. Add 1/2 teaspoon of jojoba oil and 4 teaspoons of grape seed oilgrapeseedoil8 to this mixture.
  3. Massage this blend into your scalp for two minutes.
  4. Wrap your head in a warm towel.
  5. After one hour, take off the towel and wash your hair.

The essential oils nourish and strengthen the hair follicles for new hair growth to come through with stronger and thicker hair quality.
