Thyme or Thymus vulgaris, is loaded with antibacterial compounds. Fresh, dried or in oil form, thyme is a powerhouse for care of colds and flu, with all its’ congestion. In your food, use fresh or dried thyme in stews and soups.
Use thyme oil in steam form to powerfully fight uncomfortable comgestion. Or, you could add a pinch of fresh or dried thyme, (as well as thyme oil), to near-boiling-water in a mid-size pot. After the water and herb have several minutes to gel and mix, turn off the stove-top and pull the warm pot away from the stove. Create a tent by draping a towel over your head and the pot. Breathe in the herb-infused steam for at least five full minutes.
Repeat this procedure as a treatment two to three times per day, as needed. You will feel your sinuses becoming clearer and experience immediate relief from your nagging cold and stuffiness. Avoid thyme in any form if you are pregnant. It is a very potent herb.
A recent research review, published in the Cochrane Library, which studied 25 over-the -counter cough medicine, has determined that here is no good evidence either for or against the effectiveness of formulas such as Robitussin or Mucinex or any other brand of cough syrup.
For a change, try herbal alternatives as recommended by Tieraona Low Dog, M.D. (director of education at the University of Arizona’s Program in Integrative Medicine). The ingredients featured are sage and thyme, which alleviates chest congestion. This recipe also has vitamin- C rich- lemon and throat-soothing honey. Just follow these simple steps:
- Pour hot water over 2 teaspoons of organic lemon rinds, 1 teaspoon of sage and one-half teaspoon of thyme.

- Dried or fresh herbs can be used.
- Cover and steep for 15 minutes.
- Strain the tea.
- Then add the juice of on-half lemon and 1 tablespoon of honey.
Drink two to three cups daily for cough relief. Relax and see how quickly your cough improves.
Thyme ( Thymus Vulgaris) is an herb commonly used for cooking and for seasoning foods. It is very healthy and it can be consumed as a tea also.
Thyme has many health benefits:
- it clears congestion
- it soothes sore throats
- it has valuable anti microbial properties which are very powerful
To heal a sore throat, make a tea from mixing sage and thyme. You can gargle with this mixture three to four times per day for sore throat relief.
For help with congestion, boil water and place the hot water in a bowl or a pan. Take a handful of thyme sprigs or one tablespoon of dried sprigs, and drop into the hot water. Place a towel over your head and breathe in the vapors of the thyme for a few minutes. You will feel the congestion lift.
